Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony's Breakup: The Inside Story

Jennifer Lopez & Marc Anthony's Breakup: The Inside Story

On Friday, one month after their seven-year anniversary, Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony released a statement announcing their "very difficult decision" to end their marriage. For many fans, the breakup came out of left field. After all, Lopez, 41, and Anthony, 42, have 3-year-old twins Max and Emme together. They co-own the Miami Dolphins. They're developing a reality show together. J.Lo's last album was about love. And, just two months ago, Lopez was performing with Anthony on American Idol. How long has this breakup been brewing?

A source tells People that Lopez and Anthony split after "months of nonstop arguing" -- and they ultimately came to the tough decision for the good of Max and Emme. "Marc and Jennifer decided it's best to go their separate ways for the sake of their two kids," says the source. "(Jennifer) is, of course, sad that she and Marc didn't work out, but they both feel they have tried everything."

According to the U.K.'s Daily Mail newspaper, the trouble started shortly after the couple's twins, Max and Emme, were born in 2008. That's when Lopez's mother moved in with them -- and, according to acquaintance Ed Meyer, it's when Lopez discovered that Anthony "owed millions in unpaid taxes on the Long Island estate." Meyer also says that they clashed over where to live.

"J.Lo's career is in Hollywood and she wanted to live in their Malibu mansion, and Marc loved New York," says the friend. "She was going to move to New York in a last-ditch effort to save the marriage. But last Monday I heard it was all over."

But most of all, say sources, they fought over Anthony's control-freak ways. "Marc is very controlling," says Lopez's stylist Phillip Bloch. "In the beginning she liked that because he stood up to her, and in the early days he was very much in love with her and she was with him."

"J.Lo's mother wanted to run her life, and Marc wanted to run her life, and I don't think J.Lo wanted anyone to control her," Meyer concurs.

People notes that Anthony and Lopez had not been seen in public together since the Idol finale -- except for the Samsung Hope for Children Gala in early June, at which Lopez looked pretty miserable. Two weeks later, Lopez and her mother went to Disneyland with Max and Emme -- and no Marc Anthony.

But the biggest tip-off for Hollywood insiders that things had gone south was July 9's BAFTA event in honor of Prince William and Kate Middleton. Lopez and Anthony were scheduled to attend the exclusive, once-in-a-lifetime event together. Instead, Lopez brought her mother as her date -- and left her wedding rings at home.

Officially, Lopez and Anthony are still scheduled to collaborate on their much-hyped Latino talent show, Q'Viva! But a source tells British newspaper the Mirror that tension between the couple may result in J.Lo pulling out.

"They are barely on speaking terms, and only converse to talk about the children," says the insider. "The idea was for the couple, along with choreographer Jamie King, to tour 21 countries scouting for fresh Latino talent, but obviously, the last thing either of them feels like doing right now is touring together."

For his part, Anthony seems to be moving on already. The singer took to the stage in Bogotá, Colombia, Saturday night for his first concert since announcing his split from Lopez -- and he was in a jovial mood. "They're saying I'm single," he joked, receiving huge cheers from the crowd. And he certainly acted very much the bachelor, blowing kisses to women in the audience and telling one particular "Mamacita" (a.k.a. "Hot Mama"), "You're so beautiful." Not People's Most Beautiful Person 2011 beautiful... but beautiful nonetheless.
