Sarah Jessica Parker is an international movie star, wears Manolo Blahniks on a regular basis and has a near-perfect body. In many ways, she is not your average mom. But, despite her star status, the 46-year-old actress says you might have more in common with her than you'd think.
"Yes, my life requires travel or odd public presentation, or speculation about personal things," the I Don't Know How She Does It star told Bravo's Andy Cohen during a candid conversation at the biannual Women at NBCU's "Power of the Purse" event on Oct. 4 (which iVillage live-streamed and live-chatted about). "But who I am as a mother, who I am as a wife is very, very similar to millions and millions of women working in and outside the home."
And like many moms, Parker says she worries about making mistakes with her children -- James Wilkie, 8, and twins Marion and Tabitha, 2. "(I think), what will I do today just to scar this child for life?" she said. "What one wrong thing will I say that will ruin this child forever that he or she will never be able to recover from?"
The actress gave a hilarious anecdote about a recent exchange with Tabitha one morning before 5 a.m. when her daughter "needed a different shirt, a different blanket, a different pacifier, water, a bottle -- any time I offered the one that she said she wanted, she rejected it," Parker recounted. "I could not please her...I feel as if she was disappointed in me."
But Parker is also determined not to spoil her children. "We talk a lot about what it means to earn something," she said. "You know, that because (James) is growing up in a household that some might call privileged, doesn't mean that he's entitled to that."
Luckily, Parker has her husband of 14 years, Matthew Broderick, to help her deal with the ups and downs of parenthood. "He took the girls to school this morning for me because I wanted to be here," she said.
In addition to doing the school run, Parker says there are three things she can always count on her husband for: "A good laugh. Always. You know, born from something clever and funny, not just like a lazy laugh, but a genuinely great laugh. Intellectual sword play...And real genuine love and romance with our children." Awww.
