Leighton Meester fans are getting to see a bunch of different sides to the actress these days, from her role playing cold and calculating Blair Waldorf on "Gossip Girl" to seemingly innocent aspiring singer/actress Chiles Stanton in "Country Strong" and now the very creepy and crazy Rebecca in "The Roommate."

Without getting too far into spoiler territory, Meester plays a college freshman who becomes obsessed with her roommate (played by Minka Kelly). It is hinted in the film that her character suffers from a type of bipolar disorder that leads to psychotic behavior. When MTV News caught up with the actress recently, we asked her how she went crazy for the role.

"I got to speak to a couple psychiatrists who gave me serious detail about this disorder and specific cases that they've gone to court to defend," Meester explained. "Because [those who suffer from the disorder] aren't really mentally sound, [I tried] to rationalize what she's doing, which isn't based on reality. It's tough."

The 24-year-old mentioned that she sometimes got so into character that she creeped out her co-stars. She also cited movies and books she used as tools to prep for the part.

"Movies like 'Single White Female' or 'Fatal Attraction,' 'A Woman Under the Influence,' 'The Crush' — movies like that," she explained of her study materials. "It's interesting, it really is. And then books, I've read 'The Road Less Traveled,' which is very weird, but I was just like, 'Let's see what this says,' and it definitely gave a very good idea of what people feel when they are in love, which is very similar [to what her character experiences]," Meester said. "She thinks they're connected, and she never really loses that. She feels like there are no boundaries between them, like they're the same. But I think the most beneficial thing was talking to the doctors and them giving me a background of why she would be doing what she does."
