What doJames Franco, Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth and Annette Bening have in common? They're all front-runners for this year's Oscars -- and they all admit that they use tricks to get through love scenes! In a Newsweek roundtable with six Oscar hopefuls (also including Michelle Williams and Natalie Portman), the super-hot actors discussed the challenges of having an onscreen relationship. And they made some surprising revelations! Read on for the highlights.
Annette Bening admits that, if she has "an aversion" to the actor who plays her onscreen lover, she sometimes pretends that he has the head of somebody she actually likes. "You Photoshop another head!" jokes the The Kids Are Alright actress. "Seriously. And then you fake it." James Franco says that he learned an important lesson -- "What feels best doesn't always look best" -- when he made a home sex tape. Here's the shocker: when he made that tape, he was a teenager! "I remember when I was 19 doing that, and then watching it back and thinking, oh, that looks horrible," the 127 hours star recalls. Colin Firth says there's nothing harder than doing a love scene with somebody you're actually in love with. "Because it's not controllable," explains the star of The King's Speech. "There is no way to harness that and turn it into something that is useful to you." Nicole Kidman says that the best take of her kiss with Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge was not actually the best kiss. "(Director Baz Luhrmann) was extremely precise, because he revered old movies and those big screen kisses," says the Rabbit Hole actress. "I remember when Ewan McGregor and I were first rehearsing. I was like, 'That felt really good.' And Baz was like, 'No, no.'" Although they remained more discreet in the interview, Portman and Williams actually had the most-discussed sex scenes this year: Portman's nightmarish tryst with Mila Kunis in Black Swan, and Williams' heartbreaking love scene with Ryan Gosling in Blue Valentine.
