If you've been sticking by How I Met Your Mother for six seasons just to find out who the "mother" is, then wow, you're really patient. And here's some bad news: Your wait will continue.
Responding to speculation that Ted's (Josh Radnor) future wife will pop up in the season finale (CBS, Monday, May 16, 8 p.m. ET), creator Carter Bays offers this tease to Entertainment Weekly: "This finale sets the ducks in a row for everything we’re going to see after it, leading up to Ted meeting the mother.”
Here's what Bays has let on: During the finale, in a scene set one year in the future, some of the characters are preparing for a wedding. We'll learn the identity of either the bride or the groom by the end of the season capper, but not both. And though Ted, the best man, will meet his future wife during these nuptials, viewers shouldn't expect to have the same pleasure.
In fact, when HIMYM returns this fall, the show will pick up back in the present and, throughout next season, the events leading up to this mysterious wedding will unfold. "I think what people will be most curious about is how did we get from A to B," says Mother costar Jason Segel. So, we'll all end up back at the wedding ceremony for next year's season finale, and that's when we'll get to meet the titular mother, right? Maybe.
But probably not. With the show's recent renewal for two more years, viewers likely won't learn the identity of the mother until at least 2013. As Bays himself says, "We can't really talk about how long that endgame is going to play out." Translation: HIMYM is going to milk this mystery for all it's worth. Luckily, most viewers don't tune into the show just to learn the mother's identity. It's also the source of some pretty legen--wait for it--dary comedy.
