'Perfect'! Another Sitcom About Couples

'Perfect'! Another Sitcom About Couples

Three couples, all friends, are grappling with three different sets of relationship issues. That's the nutshell premise of NBC's new show, Perfect Couples, and the network will air a sneak peek (a random episode, not the pilot) on Monday night at 10 p.m. ET.

It's a super-relatable idea—most people are either in a relationship, or want to be—and it must be an enticing one for network execs. ABC's already got a "three couples and their issues" sitcom, Better With You. And they have another one, Happy Endings, slated for spring. Plus Fox is readying a similar show, Traffic Light, also planned for early next year.

Perfect Couples has the advantage of being the first to debut. Its triumvirate of couples includes one that's "normal" (Kyle Bornheimer and Christine Woods); one that does everything passionately (David Walton and Mary Elizabeth Ellis); and one that applies pop relationship advice to their own (and everyone else's) union (Hayes MacArthur and Olivia Munn). "If you don't recognize these couples, then you are one of them," quips Ellis in this extended promo.

Based on what's shown here, the funniest scenes involve the couple that's obsessed with maintaining their new-agey, molded-by-therapy relationship. Munn is scarily good in her role as a tightly wound control freak. When MacArthur's character presents his engagement ring, he tells her, "I got this from my grandmother." She smiles and whips out her own ring. "I had this one made," she replies. "It's better."

Their relationship gives the show a satiric edge, while the other two couples run through lines that are just basic sitcom fare. The hot-blooded couple predictably makes the others uncomfortable first by screaming at each other and then by making up with a much-too-graphic public display of affection. But the reaction shot of Munn's face as she witnesses their behavior is priceless.

Will this show manage to get a foothold with viewers before the look-alikes hit the air? Hard to tell, but we'll get a better idea once it  premieres in its official timeslot, Thursdays at 8:30 p.m. ET, starting January 20.

Would you watch a sitcom about three couples and their relationship struggles?
