'Abduction': The Reviews Are In!

Critics can't get away from Jacob/'Twilight' comparisons as Taylor Lautner bids for action-hero status in John Singleton flick.
By Jocelyn Vena

For much of his career, Taylor Lautner has either been a karate-kicking spy kid or a heartbroken werewolf hopelessly in love with his mortal enemy's girl. But on Friday (September 23), the teen star launched the next phase of his career in the John Singleton-directed "Abduction."

The film centers on a young man (Lautner) who realizes that his life isn't exactly what it seems. His character sets out to learn who he really is after finding his baby picture posted on a missing-persons website. In addition to Lautner (in his first lead role), the movie also stars Lily Collins as his love interest and a number of A-listers, including Sigourney Weaver, Jason Isaacs, Maria Bello and Alfred Molina.

Before you head to the theater this weekend, check out this handy "Abduction" cheat sheet and read on for what the critics are saying about Lautner's giant leap from teen werewolf to action hero.

Taylor Lautner the Action Hero
"Even playing the hunted, jacked-up, dude-on-the-run hero of a 'realistic' action film, Taylor Lautner still looks like the world's sexiest werewolf in 'Abduction.' There's a stylized quality to his features — not just the lupine snub nose, but the daggerish Son of Spock eyebrows that lend him a squint of intensity even when not very much is going on. That face gives Lautner one advantage as an actor: He's a great camera subject, like the young Matt Damon crossed with Tom Cruise." — Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly

The Inevitable Jacob Comparisons
"Lautner's sensitive young stud in 'Abduction' isn't far removed from the pining werewolf he plays in the 'Twilight' movies. They both have anger issues, yes, but they also can be achingly sweet and vulnerable and protective — and shirtless, when appropriate." — Glenn Whipp, Los Angeles Times

The Final Word
"In the end, it all feels like much ado about not much. The film lets Lautner down more than the other way around and he essentially holds his own surrounded by the sturdy likes of Weaver, Molina, Isaacs and Bello. Collins, who made her big-screen debut in 'The Blind Side' last year and has the title role in the forthcoming 'Snow White,' has a promising, offbeat appeal." — Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

Lil Wayne Channels Jimi Hendrix For New Vibe Cover

'Music isn't about competition no more. All the gangster rappers are happy,' Wayne tells magazine.
By Rob Markman

Lil Wayne is himself a music icon, but on the cover of Vibe magazine's October/November issue, the YMCMB superstar channels the spirit of another. Sporting a regal red and gold-accented coat, similar to one that Jimi Hendrix famously wore, Weezy capped off his outfit with a black fedora and black sunglasses, finding inspiration in the legendary guitarist. In his interview, Wayne opened up about competition in rap, his feud with Jay-Z and Drake's success, and of course, MTV News got the exclusive scoop.

"There's no competition [with any artists]. Music isn't about competition no more. All the gangster rappers are happy, all the skateboard rappers are happy, all the white rappers are happy. ... Everybody just happy to do music these days," Weezy said in an exclusive magazine excerpt obtained by MTV News. "There are no problems. That sh-- died a long time ago with them old-ass rappers. We are just making music, making money and having fun — feeding our families. Competition is for the old guys."

The quote is a bit contradictory considering Wayne threw a shot at Jay-Z on "I'm Good," a song off of his latest album, Tha Carter IV. The two have quietly been feuding for some time now, throwing subliminal darts in each other's direction, never actually acknowledging each other by name. When asked if he expected any backlash from the dis, Wayne stood confident.

"Well, I'm a man. I believe as a man, you should know that. Every man should know the repercussions and consequences behind whatever they do before they do it. And of course, I know there won't be any repercussions behind what I did," the rapper told Vibe.

Hip-hop beefs are a very small part of Wayne's dynamic. Vibe editor in chief Jermaine Hall said that the Young Money boss is more than just a rapper, citing his 2010 rock-inspired Rebirth album and his acoustic hit "How to Love" as examples of Tunechi's reach. It was his diversity and modern-day rock swag that led the magazine to use Hendrix as a muse.

"He was very into the Jimi Hendrix concept," Hall said of the shoot, which took place in Miami in early August. "I didn't know how far Wayne was willing to take it. But it just so happens that Jimi is also one of his idols and actually one of the people that influenced him to pick up a guitar and try to learn how to play. So he was 100 percent onboard with the concept."

In the issue, which also features Chris Rock, J. Cole and a story on Tupac's Hollywood impact, Vibe also got Weezy to open up about Drake's success. Is his competitive spirit fueled by Drizzy's accomplishments? Not in the least bit. "I don't look at it like that. Drake is my artist. If he wasn't my artist, then yeah, maybe," he said of their relationship. "But that's my artist. He's not [just] a friend. We're more than friends. It's business. It would be impossible for it to be a competition. I mean, I'm the guy's boss."

Weezy also gets political talking about his feelings on the riots that rocked London this past August. "All you could do is pray for the people that were dealing with the situation and hope for the best. As far as them blaming hip-hop, you can blame Jesus for things, so you can't really fault anybody for blaming someone or something. All you can do is hope for the best," he said in response to those who blamed rap for the political upheaval.

"Wayne is the type of artist ... obviously he's a rock star, he's loved in the 'hood, he's touching so many pockets around this country right now," Hall said of his latest cover subject. "It's what allows him to come out first week and do [almost a million]. He's not just dealing with one audience anymore."

Dr Conrad Murray Manslaughter Trial: Day Three Live Feed

Ready for another stage of jarring courtroom testimony, Dr. Conrad Murray's manslaughter trial in the death of Michael Jackson has entered its third day (September 29).

Several key witnesses will take the stand throughout today's proceedings (see live feed below) including the King of Pop?s bodyguard, Alberto Alvarez, the paramedics who first arrived to the scene of MJ?s death, as well as Jackson's personal chef, Kai Chase.

Offering up their testimony to the courtroom on Wednesday was one of Jackson's closest companions, his personal assistant Michael Amir Williams, who detailed the moments immediately following the singer's death.

Additionally, attorney Kathy Jorrie shed light on Conrad's puzzling requests for a personal CPR machine and an additional doctor on staff, as well as inner-workings of the contract drawn up between Michael and Dr. Murray as they inched closer to Jackson's comeback concert series.

Kristen Stewart Dons 'Snow White' Armor In New Photos

Pics show Stewart filming battle scene on beach in Wales.
By Jocelyn Vena

Kristen Stewart as "Snow White"
Photo: Universal

Kristen Stewart looks like she's ready for battle. Some photos of the "Twilight" star on the set of "Snow White and the Huntsman" have hit the Internet. In them, Stewart is wearing her previously teased armor as she films scenes at Marloes Sands Beach in Pembrokeshire Wales, U.K., this week.

Photos on Screenrant.com show the actress riding a white horse alongside a group of extras dressed as medieval soldiers. They are riding through the water for what appears to be some sort of battle scene.

In some on-set candids, the ponytail-sporting actress laughs and walks around the set of the Rupert Sanders-directed flick. Stewart recently debuted her longer locks for the film at London Fashion Week. No signs of co-stars Charlize Theron (the Evil Queen), Chris Hemsworth (the Huntsman) or Sam Claflin (Prince Charming) in the new photos. The film is expected to open June 1, 2012.

"It's not a little girl sitting by a well with little tweety birds telling her what to do and where to go," Stewart told MTV News of her character. "[The costume] makes you feel kind of strong occasionally, sometimes, but I kind of feel tiny, my pinhead sticks out of these enormous things."

Her tough look has even been approved by that other "Snow White" movie director, Tarsem, who recently gushed over her battle-ready look. "She's gorgeous," he told MTV News. "She's great."

The film centers around the struggle between Snow White and the Evil Queen, who, jealous of Snow White's beauty, wants to destroy her. The catch is that Snow White has been training with the Huntsman, who has been ordered to kill her. And in true fairy-tale form, Prince Charming is enamored with Snow White.

"This, as a fable, she sort of just starts off as a bad person, so it was important to understand [why she is the way she is]," Theron explained about her character. "A lot of her circumstances will kind of bleed into her actions. ... She's a serial killer; I'm pretty much preparing to play a serial killer."

'American Idol' Finalist James Durbin Dropping LP Same Day As Daughtry

Durbin's debut, Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, will hit on November 21.
By Gil Kaufman

James Durbin

Though he was most often compared to "American Idol" runner-up Adam Lambert last year during his rebel-yelling run to a #4 finish, classic rock lover James Durbin will end up being measured against another head-banging "Idol" finisher when his debut drops in November.

Durbin will release his debut, Memories of a Beautiful Disaster, on November 21 on Wind-Up Records (home to Evanescence, among others). That just happens to be the same day that season-five fourth-place finisher said he will serve up his band's third album, Break the Spell.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Durbin's debut was produced by veteran hard-rock helmer Howard Benson, who has worked with My Chemical Romance and, yes, Daughtry.

While Daughtry's sound leans toward gritty, swelling arena rock, during his time season 10 Durbin was an unabashed fan of old-school metal, a genre he vowed to revive if given a chance.

Shortly after his elimination, Durbin told MTV News that he wanted to work with Dream Theater's Mike Portnoy, reunite with guitar legend Zakk Wylde and bring out his "secret weapon," his best friend from home who is a shredding guitar player. Given the chance, he said what he wanted most was to re-create the sound of his favorite record, the 1983 debut from late Black Sabbath metal screamer and solo star Ronnie James Dio, Holy Diver.

"I'm gonna keep it real my post 'Idol' career. I'm not gonna pretend to be somebody else on the show and then do something completely different with my career," Durbin promised. "I know who I am, I know what I wanna do, and I know where my fans are. And I know what they want."

Britney Spears Responds To 'Criminal' Video Controversy

'The video is a fantasy story,' statement says after U.K. criticism that the clip glorifies violence.
By James Montgomery

When Britney Spears flew to London earlier this month to shoot her video for "Criminal," she probably didn't think the clip would generate the kind of controversy it has.

And yet, in the week since she wrapped filming, Spears has been taken to task by politicians in the U.K. for a scene in the video, in which the pop star packs a pistol as she flees a London-area building. They've claimed that the image of Brit gripping a gun glamorizes violence and, in the aftermath of the widespread riots that rattled the nation last month, the pop star should "apologize ... for the rudeness and damage that she's done to our community."

Late Monday (September 26), MTV News received a statement from Spears' camp about the "Criminal" controversy — and, from the sound of things, she's not going to be apologizing anytime soon.

"The video is a fantasy story featuring Britney's boyfriend, Jason Trawick, which literally plays out the lyrics of a song written three years before the riots ever happened," the statement read.

Criticisms of the "Criminal" video began last week, after images of Spears and Trawick making an escape from an apparent robbery (with Brit brandishing a replica revolver) began making the rounds. The scene in question was shot in the London borough of Hackney, which was hit hard by the August riots, and local politicians were upset by what they saw as an insensitive gesture by Spears.

"It is only a music video, but it's images like this, with pop stars glamorizing gangs, which means that some young people ... get drawn in," Hackney's Member of Parliament, Diane Abbott, told the ITV news program "London Tonight." "Britney should really know better."

Hackney's council members — who gave Spears' camp the OK to shoot at the nearby Stoke Newington Town Hall — also took issue with the fact that no one involved with the production of the "Criminal" video mentioned that a gun was to be used in the clip and, had they known, they would not have allowed filming in the recently restored building.

"In this case we did not agree that a replica gun could be used at Stoke Newington Town Hall and are disappointed," the council said in a statement to "London Tonight." "We will be raising this matter with the production company."

Justin Timberlake Cast In Casablanca Records Biopic

'Spinning Gold' follows life of label co-founder Neil Bogart.
By Jocelyn Vena

Justin Timberlake

He once played Napster co-founder Sean Parker in "The Social Network," and now he's getting ready to play another real-life entrepreneur. Deadline Hollywood reports that Justin Timberlake will play '70s record producer and Casablanca Records co-founder Neil Bogart in a new biopic.

"Spinning Gold" will take a close look at Bogart's career as a record executive who launched the careers of acts like KISS, Parliament, Donna Summer and the Village People. "This is saga about a young dreamer who started with nothing and came of age in the '60s and '70s, believing anything was possible and every risk was worth taking," said Tim Bogart, Neil's son and the film's writer. He said the film is "literally three decades in the making."

Bogart died of cancer in 1982, at the age of 39. Bogart added, "We needed a young actor who can carry this picture. ... When Justin walked into the room, that was the moment I had been waiting for 29 years. He has the exact same energy as my father, the same glimmer in his eye."

A director has yet to be attached to the project, which is set to shoot in 2012. Album plans are also under way.

Fans hoping Timberlake will head back to the studio to record new music will be sad to see his film roster keeps getting filled with new projects. In November, his sci-fi flick, "In Time," hits theaters.

"To be honest, my plan would have probably been to do another record, probably right about now. I never stop considering myself a musician. To me, it's my bread and butter," Timberlake said in a recent interview with Short List. "And I mean that in a personal way. I don't mean that it finances my 'acting hobbies.' I joke with my friends that I should have a business card saying, 'David Fincher put me in a movie,' because 'Bad Teacher' got a blessing due to 'The Social Network,' and then 'Friends With Benefits' came out of that.

"All the movies I've done were just opportunities that came up, but now that they're all coming out back-to-back, people think, 'Oh, he's trying to make a statement by having an acting career,' " he continued. "But it's not like that for me. I don't ever want to stop doing music."

Blink-182's Neighborhoods Had 'Long Road' To Release

As band's first album in nearly eight years hits stores on Tuesday, Mark Hoppus tells MTV News that Blink is back from the brink.
By James Montgomery

Blink-182
Photo: Jeff Kravitz/Film Magic

It's been almost eight years since Blink-182 released their last album but, in a lot of ways, it feels much, much longer.

There's been no shortage of drama in that period, starting with the band's '05 breakup and continuing right on through the deaths of close friends Jerry Finn and Adam "DJ AM" Goldstein, and the plane crash that left drummer Travis Barker seriously injured.

There was the gradual cooling of tensions and the triumphant reunion, the raucous tour kickoff and finally, the two-year process of recording a new album.

And after all that, Blink are finally back with Neighborhoods, a record that crams all those highs and lows into just 36 minutes. It hit stores Tuesday (September 27), bringing one (very dark) chapter of the band's career to a close, while simultaneously jump-starting another. And on the day of its release, MTV News emailed Blink's Mark Hoppus to get his take on the long road he and his bandmates took, and just what lies ahead. Echoing the sentiments of many long-suffering Blink fans, he's having a hard time wrapping his head around all of this too.

"[It's been] eight years since the last Blink-182 album was released. I can't believe it. It seems like just last year, and yet so much has happened since then," he wrote to us. "And now, finally, the new album that we've been talking about and working on for the past two years is out. This is the best part, the part where it turns from ideas in our head and abstract descriptions of what it might or will sound like, into a being unto itself. A CD. An mp3. A thing ... that people can listen to for themselves."

And while Hoppus is thankful to begin moving forward, he can't help but look back too. It's sort of inevitable, given everything that's happened in the eight years between Blink albums. But, in a lot of ways, those trials and tribulations have not only made the band stronger, but helped create an album they are all endlessly proud of. And now, it's all yours.

"It has been a long trip to get here ... five years of pain and animosity, the passing of some of our dearest friends, the rebuilding of our band. And now the new album is here," Hoppus continued. "Initial reaction to the songs and record has been overwhelmingly positive, and for that I'm truly grateful and excited. Thanks to everyone who has stuck with us through thick and thin. This record is for all of you. I hope the album means as much to you as it does to us."

Looking lovely in a white lace dress and beige stilettos while toting a blue leather handbag, the 25-year-old actress cruised around town in her new employer's sleek black Ferrari while loading up on items at the upscale shops lining the Italian city's streets.

Beyonce Says Shopping For Maternity Clothes 'So Much Fun'

B dishes on dressing for her expanding baby bump after unveiling latest House of Deréon line.
By Jocelyn Vena

Beyoncé
Photo: MTV

Beyoncé hit up London Fashion Week this past weekend to launch the latest House of Deréon line. The line was described as "global nomad," and according to B, anyone — even pregnant ladies like herself — can wear the clothes.

"What I'm wearing today is part of the collection and it's not supposed to be, but it actually is really good for ... maternity," the singer, dressed in a sparkly black pantsuit, told CNN.

B explained that she and her mom, Tina Knowles, started working on the line at least six months before her pregnancy, so they hadn't planned maternity clothes specifically. "But we do have some things that I am still trying to rock," she admitted.

"Actually, I am having so much fun, it has been the most fun time now that [my pregnancy] has been announced and I don't have to, you know, it was really difficult to conceal," she continued. "But now that I can be proud and excited about it, I'm having so much fun shopping. It's great."

Beyoncé has always been a trendsetter in the world of fashion, and that isn't going to change just because she's going to be a mom. "I just feel like it is often within," she said. "My mother has always told me that beauty comes from within and what's exciting about being a woman is you can say, 'Today ... I feel really conservative, today I'm feeling classy. Today, I am going on a date and I want to just be a showstopper.' And you know there is this variety of beautiful clothes that can bring out whatever you feel inside," she added. "But it comes from here and you should wear your clothes, they shouldn't wear you."

The singer also shared that she isn't sure whether to buy pink or blue clothes as she doesn't know the baby's gender yet. Her mom, however, is just happy about the news. "I am so delighted. I'm over the moon," she gushed.

Willow Smith Finishing Up Debut Album, Jukebox Says

'A lot of her music has a very big influence of everything from rock to pop to hip-hop,' producer tells Mixtape Daily.
By Rob Markman

Behind the Beats: Jukebox
Willow Smith took music fans by surprise in 2010 when she dropped her debut single, "Whip My Hair." Will Smith's swagged-out offspring blended a pop sound with a distinct urban sensibility, and producer Ronald "Jukebox" Jackson was largely responsible for the platinum hit.

So what's next musically for the 10-year-old singer? Jukebox tells Mixtape Daily that Willow is in the process of finishing up her Roc Nation debut.

"I did like eight, nine songs on Willow, so right now, we're in the process of just trying to close out the album," he said. "It's just the whole process. You got to think about it: She's a 10-year old girl. She's gotta have a life, she's gotta be a kid."

According to Jukebox, the album will contain a myriad of sounds. "Willow is kind of a combination of what 'Whip My Hair' was. Willow just isn't a pop star, she isn't just an urban artist; she's very international," he explained. "A lot of her music has a very big influence of everything from rock to pop to hip-hop."

On "Rock Star," fans will hear a different side of Willow, and Jukebox — who also did the music for Swizz Beatz and Chris Brown's "Dance Like a White Girl" — hopes it will be her next hit.

"Next single which I'm praying for is a record I did called 'Rock Star.' ... She's been performing it everywhere. It's getting very great reaction," he said. "We also did a record with Diggy Simmons that's incredible. ... She's just a combination of everything pretty much."

Adele has been on a record-setting tear all year and now the British songbird can claim to be a "Guinness Book of World Records" champ. The upcoming 2012 edition of the book reveals that the "Rolling in the Deep" singer is in good company, as Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Willow Smith and Justin Bieber also set some high-water marks over the past 12 months.

Adele can count three records, including first female to land two singles and two albums in the U.K. top five simultaneously — which only the Beatles had achieved before in 1963. Her breakthrough second CD, 21, claimed the record as the first album in U.K. chart history to sell 3 million copies in one calendar year.

She also logged the most consecutive weeks with the #1 album in the U.K. for a solo female with 11 weeks at the top — beating a record previously held by Madonna's The Immaculate Collection — and most cumulative weeks with a U.K. #1 for a solo female (18), beating out both Alanis Morissette and Shania Twain, who shared the previous record at 11 weeks.

Lady Gaga's social media predominance was rewarded, landing her the Most Followers on Twitter crown with 11,259,372 as of June 29 (she's currently at 13,469,754). In addition, "Poker Face" was honored for Most Weeks on U.S. Digital Hot Songs chart at 83 weeks. Gaga made the book last year for having the most consecutive weeks on the U.K. chart and being the most searched-for woman on the Internet.

Some other new records:

Justin Bieber: The singer's "Baby" was dubbed the Most Popular Video of Any Kind Online, thanks to 463,820,304 views as of February 16, 2011.

The Black Eyed Peas: The Biggest Selling Download in the U.K. is "I Gotta Feeling," the first-ever track to go over 1 million downloads in England.

J.K. Rowling: The "Harry Potter" author is lauded for being the First Billionaire Author thanks to sales of more than 400 million copies of the books worldwide.

"Glee": The hit show scored the Most Hit Singles in a Calendar Year with 48 making it into the U.K. top 75 in 2011, breaking their previous record of 45 hits in 2010.

Rihanna: First Female to have U.K. #1 singles in five consecutive years (2007-2011), from "Rude Boy" to her most recent, "Only Girl (In the World)." Only Elvis and the Beatles have had more U.K. #1 singles in consecutive years.

Willow Smith: The Youngest Transatlantic Top 20 Artist, thanks to "Whip My Hair" hitting the top 20 when she was only 10 years old.

Lil Wayne: Most U.S. Hot 100 Hits by a Rap Artist with 64 between 1999 and 2010.

U2: Highest Grossing Music Tour for the 360 outing, which by April 2011 had raked in more than $539 million for 110 shows between July 2009 and July 2011.

'Moneyball': The Reviews Are In!

Critics herald the baseball flick as 'the prime Brad Pitt movie.'
By Kara Warner

On paper, "Moneyball" is a movie that sells itself. It's based on a best-selling book about our national pastime, the screenplay for which was adapted by Oscar winners Aaron Sorkin and Steve Zaillian, and it stars Brad Pitt, in all his handsome, charming splendor, as Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane. Throw in a killer supporting cast that includes Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman and several real-life ball players, and you've got the makings of a hit.

With a 94 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, "Moneyball" seems to be a solid winner with critics. So take an early seventh-inning stretch and settle in for some sports clichés as we sort through the "Moneyball" reviews!

The Story
"A sports-centric come-from-behind drama that harbors profound truths under its self-effacing grin of an exterior, 'Moneyball' is a movie of such loping, unforced ease and solid entertainment value that it's easy to take its gifts for granted. [Director Bennett] Miller barely puts a foot wrong in bringing to life the tale of Oakland A's general manager Billy Beane, who in 2002 — competing against teams with three times his payroll — sought to rebuild the slumping A's and revolutionize baseball recruiting using 'Sabermetrics,' a system by which players are chosen based on who gets on base most often. That approach sounds so simple as to be self-evident. But in 'Moneyball,' such logic runs afoul of Beane's old-school scouts, who are played in the movie by a colorfully grizzled collection of character actors and some real-life baseball veterans. Their banter, in which they refer to players' jaw lines and girlfriends while they decide whom to hire, lends 'Moneyball' a thoroughly enjoyable through-line of tough, vernacular wit. What's more, that plain-spoken charm couches a far deeper conceptual point: that objective truth not only exists but matters, even at a time when it's continually being trumped by superstition, 'feelings' and irrational belief." — Ann Hornaday, The Washington Post

The Brad Pitt Factor
"If Pitt's role in 'Moneyball' is more of a conventional star turn than his career-shifting performance as the stern 1950s father in 'The Tree of Life' (for which he emphatically deserves awards but won't win any), it's still terrific. He's on-screen in almost every scene, often filling it up in extreme close-up, and captures the bluff, buff and shrewd Beane, a washed-up jock who embraced an unorthodox statistical philosophy through sheer necessity, with great wit and physicality. (Let me throw in that 'Moneyball' is a delirious study of bad early-2000s guy fashions and haircuts, which may elude some of the audience but is definitely conscious.) Let me hasten to assure you that 'Moneyball' isn't all that much of a baseball movie, although fans of the national pastime will of course rush to see it. It's a prime Brad Pitt movie — arguably the prime Brad Pitt movie — and an American fable about a battered but lovable divorced dad who defies conventional wisdom and beats the odds." — Andrew O'Hehir, Salon.com

The Book-to-Film Comparison
"The big-screen adaptation of Michael Lewis' engaging 2003 book is also filled with compromises. Someone crammed 'Major League'-style sports clichés into a more nuanced story about baseball and progress — and then tried to fit a Brad Pitt star vehicle inside of that. The result is an interesting but frustrating near-miss. Chronology and context are mucked with liberally. This happens in almost every sports movie based on real events, although A's fans will be blown away that Tim Hudson, Barry Zito and Mark Mulder and their combined 57 wins in 2002 are scrubbed from existence here. Of the three, only Hudson gets a cameo, and he blows his start." — Peter Hartlaub, San Francisco Chronicle

The Final Word, Pro-Con Style
"Bennett Miller's' Moneyball' — adapted by Aaron Sorkin and Steven Zaillian from the nonfiction book by Michael Lewis — is a sports movie for people who don't like sports movies. I know this is true because I enjoyed it. ... Cinematographer Wally Pfister's deliberately unglamorous presentation of the A's dilapidated clubhouse is a long way from the gold-and-sepia tones of Barry Levinson's 'The Natural.' 'You can't help but be romantic about baseball,' Billy observes to Peter, even as he's being reviled by his own organization for his supposedly bloodless reliance on the stats. It's to the director's credit, and Pitt's, that 'Moneyball' is anything but bloodless — in its own quiet, unspectacular way, this movie courses with life." — Dana Stevens, Slate.com

"The downside of Pitt's triumph is that it unbalances the movie, throwing more of the focus on Billy than the team. To put 'Moneyball' over the fence, Miller and his writers needed to make something else hit home: the meaning of the on-base percentage. What does it say about a player who can't throw far, can't steal a base, rarely hits a ball over the fence, and yet can be as great an asset as a future Hall of Famer? Instead of answering that question — and dramatizing how wins can be built from unflashy players working in sync under a manager who understands 'small ball' — Miller shifts into montage mode (They won! They won again! They're on a streak!), as if Beane and Brand had written a computer program that was running to its inevitable conclusion. That, of course, leaves the team's manager, Art Howe (played by Philip Seymour Hoffman, maybe to pay Miller back for helping him win an Oscar in 'Capote'), a cipher, a nonpresence on and off the field. 'Moneyball' has everything but team spirit." — David Edelstein, New York

Once filled up, Selena and Justin continued forth with their doings by strolling down the beach to feed the seagulls and offering up a little PDA with hugs and kisses throughout.

Demi Lovato's Unbroken Is 'Impressive,' 'Empowering'

'Jessie' actress Debby Ryan applauds the latest album by her fellow Disney star.

Demi Lovato has certainly caused quite a splash this week, with her album Unbroken making Lovatics out of previous skeptics, thanks to personal lyrics and powerhouse vocals.

The 19-year-old Lovato has said the album is her way of "figuring it out" as she makes the transition from Disney princess to 20-something pop star. That theme speaks to fellow Disney star Debby Ryan.

"I've listened to a bit," the "Jessie" star told MTV News. "Toby Gad, with whom she produced 'Skyscraper,' he wrote that with [singer] Kerli [Kõiv]. I like her stuff as well. They wrote it and produced it, and when they placed it with Demi, it was amazing, and it's absolutely empowering and really, really strong."

The track and the album totally mirror who Lovato is as a person, Ryan said. "The thing about Demi, she's always able to show her vulnerability and her strength and her whole personality in her music and definitely her voyage," she said of the comeback kid. "I think she's in such a cool place of finding her sound and revamping her sound and working with amazing people."

Bottom line is Ryan feels the album is "very impressive" thanks to its production value and guests like Missy Elliott and Timbaland, to name a few. She also had kind words for Gad, whom she worked with on the theme song for her show "Jessie," so she gets how he's able to weave some musical magic. "I admire him a lot," she said. "He knows his way around the pop realm."

What do you think of Demi's new album? Let us know in the comments below!

Kim Kardashian: Belle Noel Jewelry Launch Lady

Tending to press efforts for one of her countless business endeavors, Kim Kardashian took her sexy ways to the Bloomingdale's 59th Street Store in New York City on Wednesday evening (September 21).

The E! reality star rocked a hot animal printed frock with Louboutin heeled boots as she was on hand to launch the Belle Noel jewelry collection.

Cheerfully welcoming all those in attendance, the 30-year-old was all smiles despite battling a rumbling tummy, as she tweeted, "Just ate a hot dog and Mr. Softy ice cream from the food trucks and have a tummy ache now"

The Bloomingdale's visit comes as Kim just returned to NYC after a brief trip back to Los Angeles to cheer on brother Robert during his debut on "Dancing With the Stars" on Monday night.

Brad Pitt And Jonah Hill: The '21 Jump Street' Connection

Hill adapted the '80s TV series — one of his 'Moneyball' co-star's first acting gigs — for the big screen.

After years of pleading and promising, Jonah Hill has reportedly landed Johnny Depp for a cameo in the big-screen adaptation of the '80s TV series "21 Jump Street."

Hill actually had another connection to a "Jump Street" vet in Brad Pitt, who appeared in one episode as a long-haired high school kid. The actors now star in "Moneyball," a film that had wrapped production a year before cameras began rolling on "21 Jump Street." But Hill never hit up Pitt about joining in the new "21 Jump Street," as MTV News learned at the Toronto International Film Festival.

"I did '21 Jump Street,' " Pitt told his co-star. "It was one of my first jobs."

"Yeah, I know!" Hill responded. "I didn't bring it up with him just because I didn't think he'd want to talk about it that much. You were on '21 Jump Street,' because I had to watch all the episodes before I adapted it. You were fantastic!"

"I don't even know what I did!" Pitt said. "That was the first big gig. You get a gig, man, you get a line! I think [my one line was] yes or no. I don't know what I said."

Hill, meanwhile, is still refusing to confirm reports that Depp will appear in "21 Jump Street," which is set for a March release date. "You'll have to see," he told us earlier this month.

Depp himself is not nearly as circumspect, dishing us the details this past summer. "I went and did my bit as I was hoping to, and it worked out really well. It was really fun," he said. "I got to spend some time with Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum and the wonderful directors [Phil Lord and Chris Miller] on that. It was a great experience."

Check out everything we've got on "21 Jump Street."

Lady Gaga Describes Her Love For New York On 9/11 Anniversary

Recalling the day she watched the towers fall, Gaga calls NYC 'the husband I never married.'
By Jocelyn Vena

Lady Gaga is one of the many New Yorkers who were affected personally by the terror attacks on September 11. The pop star was in high school in Manhattan the day it happened, and 10 years later, she still tears up when remembering the intense emotions she felt as she watched the Twin Towers fall.

"I mean, there's so many stories that people don't know," she told MTV during her intimate chat for her special "Inside the Outside," which was taped the day after Osama bin Laden was killed and 9/11 was on everyone's mind. "I watched the towers fall from the roof of my school, holding all my best friends. I don't know ... just, my affinity and my love and the relationship I have with New York City — it's like the husband I never married."

MTV parent company Viacom has teamed up with MyGoodDeed and HandsOn Network, organizers of this year's September 11 National Day of Service and Remembrance, and with artists including Lady Gaga, Nas, DJ Pauly D, Julianne Hough and Drake Bell to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks by asking, "What will you do to remember?"

In her documentary interview, Gaga spoke often about her love for her hometown, sharing that she has one very personal way of connecting with the Big Apple. Gesturing the jacket she wore, she said, "Well, this is how I get home; my leather jacket's like my Dorothy slippers. ... That's why I changed when we sat down. You said, 'I want to ask you about New York,' and I said, 'You'd better get my leather.' I wrote so many songs on this new album [Born This Way] about New York City. I mean, every song on all my albums has some relationship to New York City, but one in particular 'Marry the Night,' that record is about my husband, New York."

Through Sunday, Viacom's networks will air specially produced "I Will" public service announcements featuring artists and actors, along with Viacom employees.

The multiplatform public service campaign is designed to inspire Americans to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the attacks by committing to good deeds, charity or volunteer service.

What will you do to remember 9/11? Share your thoughts below, and visit 911day.org to upload your video response.
